What is Powder Coating?
Powder coating is an advanced finishing process where dry, free-flowing thermoplastic or thermoset powder is electrostatically applied to a grounded metal part. The part is then cured in an oven (typically around 400°F / 200°C), causing the powder to melt, flow, and chemically cross-link into a highly durable, uniform protective layer.

Excellent for hiding machining lines or sheet metal imperfections. Available in smooth, matte, fine sand, and heavy wrinkle textures.
Eco-Friendly
Contains virtually zero Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Oversprayed powder can be recovered and reused, making it a highly sustainable process.
Textures & Finishes
Beyond an infinite spectrum of RAL and Pantone colors, powder coating offers unique textures that enhance grip, hide surface defects, and provide a premium industrial look.
Smooth (Gloss/Matte)
The standard finish. Ranging from high-gloss (90%+) to flat matte. Requires a well-prepared base material as it will not hide deep scratches.
Sand / Fine Texture
Provides a fine, sandpaper-like feel. Excellent for electronics enclosures and sheet metal parts, as it effectively hides minor fabrication marks and fingerprints.
Wrinkle / Vein
A heavy, deeply textured finish. Extremely durable and provides superior grip. Commonly used on automotive parts, industrial machinery, and heavy equipment.
Design & Masking Guidelines
Unlike anodizing, powder coating applies a thick, physical layer of plastic over your part. Engineering for this thickness and communicating masking requirements is critical for a successful assembly.
Coating Thickness
Powder coating adds significant volume to a part. A hole's diameter will shrink, and a shaft's diameter will grow. You must adjust your CAD models or explicitly specify masking.

Masking & Plugging
We use high-temperature silicone plugs and specialized tapes that withstand the 400°F curing oven. Please provide a clear 2D PDF drawing detailing the following:
- Threaded Holes: All internal threads must be plugged. External threads must be capped. Powder will ruin threads.
- Electrical Grounds: Powder coating is an electrical insulator. Areas requiring grounding or EMI shielding must be masked off (bare metal).
- Mating Surfaces: Critical flat surfaces for assembly or sealing (O-ring grooves) should remain uncoated.
Metals for Powder Coating
Aluminum & Alloys
The most popular substrate. Commonly used for custom enclosures, heatsinks, and automotive parts. Withstands oven curing temperatures perfectly without warping.
Steel & Stainless Steel
Excellent for heavy industrial equipment, brackets, and structural frames. Powder coating provides the necessary rust and corrosion protection that bare mild steel lacks.
Zinc / Die Castings
Powder coating adheres very well to cast metals. Note that porous castings may require an "outgassing" bake prior to coating to prevent bubbles in the final finish.
* Note: Standard powder coating requires an oven cure of ~400°F (200°C). Standard plastics, 3D printed parts, and low-temp materials will melt and cannot be powder coated.

Powder Coating vs. Wet Paint: Which is better?
For industrial and structural components, powder coating is almost always superior. It provides a much thicker, harder, and more durable finish that resists scratching, chipping, and fading. Wet paint is typically only used when precise custom color matching (beyond RAL) is required, or if the substrate cannot withstand the heat of the curing oven.
Do I need to prepare the surface before coating?
Huade handles all surface preparation. We utilize chemical washing, degreasing, and often light sandblasting/bead blasting to remove oils, scale, and ensure the powder has a clean, micro-textured profile to bond to.
How do I specify a color?
We use the international RAL color standard. When submitting your RFQ, simply provide the 4-digit RAL code (e.g., RAL 9005 for Jet Black) and your desired gloss level or texture.
