How we plan aerospace machining work

Aerospace machining is not a generic “tight-tolerance” request. The machining route is determined by the drawing revision, material condition, datum chain, critical characteristics, finish, and the inspection evidence required at release. Confirming these inputs before cutting prevents a capable process from becoming the wrong process for the part.

1. Define the control plan

We identify critical bores, profiles, threads, sealing faces, and positional relationships from the drawing. These determine setup strategy and inspection points.

2. Match material to process

7075, titanium, 17-4PH, and nickel alloys respond differently to heat, clamping, tool reach, and finishing. Material condition and certificate requirements are confirmed before planning.

3. Release with evidence

Inspection records, first-article expectations, and surface or special-process documentation are established in the RFQ so delivery requirements are visible throughout production.

Send the current 3D model, controlled drawing, material and condition, critical characteristics, inspection plan, finish or special-process requirements, and the required records. State whether the work is prototype, first article, or repeat production.

Which aerospace CNC machining process is suitable for complex parts?+

Use multi-axis milling when compound faces, deep pockets, or multiple datum relationships benefit from fewer setups. Turning or turn-milling is normally selected for concentric shafts, sleeves, fittings, and rotational features. The drawing and inspection datums decide the route.

Can material traceability and inspection records be supplied?+

Requirements should be agreed before quotation. Material certificates, dimensional inspection records, and first-article documentation are planned against the purchase order and drawing revision rather than assumed after production starts.
